Throwback Thursday: Space Mountain 1977 Commercial

WordPress

Exactly 25 years ago, on January 15, 1975, my favorite ride at the Magic Kingdom first opened. In honor of the attraction's 25th anniversary, here's a commercial about Space Mountain...in Disneyland!

I really love how ominous this commercial makes Space Mountain appear to be. I guess it makes sense. This IS a thrill ride, so you want to make it look as THRILLING as possible. Reminds me of this early commercial for Big Thunder Mountain. That makes the ride look like a horror movie!

The unintentionally hilarious part of this commercial is how it states, quite unironically, "Space Mountain, it can only happen in Disneyland..."

...or Disney WORLD, where it opened three years earlier. And then in Tokyo Disneyland. And Disneyland Paris. And Hong Kong Disneyland. Honestly, the only Disney park without a Space Mountain is Shanghai Disneyland, and that's because they built the Tron Lightcycle Run coaster instead.

Speaking of which, Tron Lightcycle Coaster is, of course, being built at the Magic Kingdom. A lot of people have been worried about how this will affect Space Mountain. Personally, if Splash Mountain couldn't affect Big Thunder Mountain one bit, I'm not too worried about Tron affecting Space Mountain. Obviously, I'm excited. That's sure to be my next favorite attraction once it opens. Though Space Mountain will always have a special place in my heart as my absolute favorite.

  1. Tron Lightcycle Run is not going to affect Space Mountain. It will always be popular.

I remember Space Mountain in it's first years with the open load area and the RCA Victor Dog. Love those early days. Also have been on Space Mountain in Disneyland during first year of operation. It really is a timeless ride. Thanks, Dudebro.

    1. Welcome. And yes, I know that Space Mountain and Tron will both be popular.

  2. I remember that as the first Disneyland commercial I ever saw on TV. I was actually surprised to see it, since we lived in the St Louis area and Disneyland wasn't doing much out-of-market, traditional TV advertising at the time.

I remember being worried when we went on our first WDW vacation a couple of years later whether I would be able to handle Space Mountain or not since my best friend had ridden it and thrown up. Commercials like this just built up the ominous factor. Fortunately, I survived...and rode the darned thing three times a day four days in a row.

    1. I'm sure when Space Mountain first opened, it was considered the most intense ride at Disneyland. That wouldn't surprise me in the least. The only other thrill ride at the time was the Matterhorn. But, my, have times changed since then. Now it's one of the tamer thrill rides at the park, save perhaps for Gadget's Go Coaster.

  3. I remember that commercial very well. It really helped to build up the excitement, prior to experiencing the ride in person. I rode Space Mountain at DL about a month after it opened.

I also remember that Big Thunder commercial playing on TV, as well. In between those two years, there was a commercial for the "New Matterhorn," after they had added the Abominable Snowman in 1978. That commercial ended with the same tag line, "The New Matterhorn.....It Could Only Happen At Disneyland." I'm not sure how many years they used that slogan/tag line....but yeah, that is pretty funny that they used it for Space Mountain, when it obviously wasn't ONLY "happening" at Disneyland!

    1. Living on the East Coast, I was always envious of Disneyland for having the Matterhorn. I always wanted to ride it. But at least WDW has more coasters now--that is, when you take all of the parks into consideration.
